Strange Female Behavior

Question
I have 2 guineas, an adult and a 5-6 week old.  They have only been together for 2 weeks.  They get along alright, except when I first got the baby, and just this week, the older one tries to mount the baby.  She then runs away and either popcorns, waggles her rear, or drags her rear on the ground.  Is this normal behavior?  I read it could just be a dominance thing, or maybe she's ovulating and is really "in the mood."  I think I'm going to take them to the vet soon to get a check-up, so if you don't know, I'll ask them.

Answer
Brian,

What they are showing is normal behavior, your right it is a dominance thing. The baby is to young for them to go through the dominance behavior like adults do, when and adult and a baby are put together they do a totally different way of showing dominance.

Mounting the baby is normal, it is the older ones way of showing the baby who is the alpha. By dragging her rear she is leaving her scent behind that tells the baby who is the alpha. Wiggling her rear is also just another sign to the baby that she is the dominate one. This is all normal behavior, and it will settle down in a little while. I would say give it abut another week or so. It really depends on the baby and how submissive she is to the older one.

Nothing to worry about, it sounds like you are taking great care of them, just keep that up and you'll have happy little Guinea Pigs.

Take care now and enjoy those little Guinea Pigs.
