Question
My chocolate brown miniature female poodle and red toy male poodle are expecting their first litter. I am wondering if they will be miniatures, toys or somewhere in between when grown?  Also will this color mix produce some browns and some reds or does the male sperm determine the likely color & size?

Answer
From what I've read and understand, when breeding a miniature and toy, you will get either miniatures or toys. A teacup poodle may even be born. It just depends on what's in the genetic make up of both parents.

As for the colors, wow. There are so many different ways these pups can come out.  It goes back to genetics, what color were their parents, grand parents, ect. To even give a guestamate, you really need to know your dogs' lines. I am listing a web page that has other links on it to some good poodle color genetics. I honestly don't know poodles that well, but tried to do some research for you. There's no way that I could explain it all here, but these web sites do a really good job of it. They will be better able to explain the color genetics in poodles than I could ever hope to!:-)    http://www.partipoodleworld.com/ColorGenetics.htm

As for the male's sperm, his sperm just picks out what sex the pups will be. If you get all girls, or all boys, thank dad. :-) It's the genetics behind the sperm and egg when they meet that determines the rest. When sperm meets egg, the pup will get 1/2 of the sire's DNA, and 1/2 from mom. Together, they determine the color, size, temperament, health, ect. I hope that I've helped! And I learned something new about Poodles today.:-)
