Question
QUESTION: My male shih tzu got to my female in heat (his daughter) and she is now pregnant after a visit to the vet today (ultrasound).  What complications should I expect if any, and how will this affect getting good homes for them, knowing the father is a direct line to her?

ANSWER: Hi Judy

You need to make your new puppy owners aware of the close breeding.  Any inherent traits (good, bad or indifferent) will explode in the pups.  So for example if there is a mutant gene for eye problems, or if the lines have skin issues, or temperament issues, thyroid condition, epilepsy, depression, or whatever it will come be pronounced in the off-spring.

That being said, you can expect one or two of the pups to be the very best.  Interbreeding is a tool used by breeders but it pups must be culled hard.  And if culling is not an option for you, then spay/neuter any pups from this litter that you are not using in a breeding program.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Thanks for the advice.  The email states that I can rate the answer, but I am not sure where to do this.  I will gladly do this for you.  A fine answer, but what is culling?

Answer
I choose not to be rated. But that you for the kind thoughts.

"Culling" is a term used to eliminate pups. It is used by breeders to promote a breed and to ensure "undesirable" genetic traits are not added to a line.

Placing the pups on a non-breeding contract and/or doing early laser spay/neuter works.
