Question
My Toy Poodle had a liter of 6 one was still born and she ate it. For 7 days she has had DARK GREEN GUE coming out, more so after peeing. Day 8 color has changed to brown. What does that mean? If its a dead puppy or a placenta that got stuck, will it pass can it kill her? and is she getting better now that the color has changed to maple brown then  Honey brown on Day 9? On Disability and couldn't afford the X-ray is there any thing i can do for her at home, I have been massaging her belly Please help.

Answer
Hi Sheree.  It is normal for the mother to pass greenish colored mucus for a couple of months after having a litter of puppies.

It is normal for a placenta to be passed immediately after each puppy is born, however: In larger litters, some placentas may be retained and be expelled gradually days after all puppies are born.  Sometimes the mother will pass the placenta outside, while using the restroom, and you will not see it at all.

Keep a close eye on her, and if you see any symptoms such as:  temperature above 102.5, vomiting prolonged diarrhea, lack of energy, loss of appetite, then I suggest that you contact a veterinarian.

I believe there are veterinarians that work on a sliding scale, for those who are on fixed incomes.  I would call my local shelter to see where the one in your area is located.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
