Question
Our Standard Poodle, Emma, is 2-1/2 and going through her first pregnancy.  two questions : If there are more pups than viable tits, what is a good recipe for substitute formula, and, at what age in weeks is a good time to start on feeding them a regular puppy food diet?

Answer
Hi. Even if there are more puppies than nipples, as long as mom is putting out enough milk, then you can make sure the pups are rotated, and they should be fine. You can buy puppy formula from the stores, or there are a few homemade ones. I'll have to find them for you, and I'll post it. When to wean, that really depends on mom. Some moms will just about stop feeding when the pups are three weeks old. Some will slow down feeding at this time. If she does, then you can offer soaked puppy food to the pups. If she continues to feed them well, then I'd start the weaning process at about 4-5 weeks, and have them completely weaned by 6-7 weeks.
