Question
Something strange is happening around my house. About 2 months ago we came home and our 11 year old mutt, was lathargic he didn't really want to move, but would he wouldn't eat but did drink alot of water, being his age we thought it might be a stroke. He died before we could get him to the vet because they were closed for thanksgiving. THen about 2 weeks later one of my 9 month old puppies, became lathargic and was throwing up, he went to the vet and they said it was parvo, we treated him and he is doing great. Then a dog that isn't mine but made my home his, came up very lathargic acted as though he couldn't see, he walked but acted very drunk. His gums were cold. I tried warming him up, but after awhile he didn't want anything to do with me, and went outside and left. Then yesterday my 13 yr old mutt, the mother of the 11 yr old, when I came home she was asleep in my bed, which isn't unusual, but she had pottyed all over herself and the bed, as I was cleaning I noticed she wasn't moving out of the way for me, I tried to get her to move and realized she can not use her hind legs. Her gums were ice cold. my mom layed with her in a blanket for an hour rubbing her gums and the warmth came back, she was able to go to the water bowl and get water, and to use the bathroom of a wee wee pad, but ever since she has been laying in the bed, not able to move her hind legs without extreme difficulty. There is nothing I can do for the 3 dogs before her, but I was wondering what may be going on with my dogs. I have always had very healthy dogs.

Answer
Boy, I haven't a clue what is going on with your dogs, but if it isn't some sort or virus or bacteria, I would say that they have gotten into something. It is time to get your dog into your vet for a thorough examination (ASAP!), and if she doesn't make it, you really should have a necropsy done to find out what is going on. There might be something in your environment that is causing this problem, and you need to know what it is before bringing in any other dogs.

I am assuming that your dogs are up-to-date on their vaccinations? Parvo virus, for one thing, can last in the environment for quite some time.

My sympathies on the loss of your dogs,
Karen
