Question
Hello Cindi, my 9 year old Pekingese has symptoms of cataracts in both eyes and i am heartbroken. 2 vets have confirmed this. I live in Dubai in the Middle East where you do not have the privileges of the best pet care, my dog loves all sorts of veggies and grapes.Could you please recommend a diet to help slow down the cataracts from developing, the vet recommended i take him for a 500 mt long walk everyday. Also would you recommend that i use Similasan Catract drops i found this on the internet. Please help me .Thank you.

Answer
Hi Paulita,
Is surgery not an option for your baby in your area?
Oddly enough I spent some time there myself MANY years ago so to some extent I do know what you're dealing with.
Other than having your boy on a good premium food (if one is not available in your area you can always cook for him :)), supplements are probably your best bet. Vitamin E, Omega fish oil, B complex, vitamin C, A and biotin. I don't know that any of these things will slow the cataracts, but they will improve his immune system and his general health.
Unfortunately I don't know a thing about the drops you mentioned., I did do some research on them, and can't find anything in the medical community that would point toward them helping at all. But since they are a homeopathic remedy, then that is not uncommon. The thing that troubles me about them is that they warn that initial exacerbation of symptoms could occur. I find that unsettling at best. If I were you, I'd discuss using them with your vet before actually giving them a try. Err on the side of caution :).
There really isn't much, if anything that can slow the progress of cataracts other than surgery. Do give the supplements though, while they really may not help, they certainly will not hurt.
I'm so sorry about your baby Give him hugs for me
Cindi
