QuestionWe have a dog that is 12 years old and terrified of thunder. Every time there is a thunderstorm, our dog scratches on anything near, pants and paces around for the duration of the storm. We tried crating her, but she will hurt herself trying to get out. She has even tore apart one of our doors in our house! We don't want to use medication, so I thought your expertise in dog behavior could provide us with a starting point to help her conquer her fear of thunder. Thanks for your time, and any advice you can give!

AnswerUnfortunately, this is something that a lot of dogs suffer with, and nobody really has an 100% concrete reason why or how to remedy it. Some people use medication, some use "anxiety wraps," some use de-sensitization by playing CD's with storm sounds.
I wish I could be more help than that. Perhaps your vet may have other suggestions.
