3.5 months Lab

Question
I have just got a black Lab puppy, she is 3.5 months now, I bought her when she was just 2.5 months. Since we don't have big land at night we put her on the side alley with gate of our house and during the day she spends most of her time inside the house. When we take her out of the side alley in the morning she smells awful since she slept over the pee she made during the night so every morning we have to wipe her before allowing her to go into the house. I wonder if there is a way to tell her not to sleep over the pee ? Is it due to the hot weather in the tropical country I'm living ?
Thank you.

Answer
Dogs instinctively like to keep themselves clean.  Unfortunately sometimes they are forced to live in their filth when young and lose their instinct for cleanliness.  Their new owners then have a problem teaching them to be clean.

My Labs of course, sleep in the house at night in a crate.  I do not know if dog crates are available where you live or it would be acceptable to have her in the house at night.  To cope with accidents at first, I start my puppies out up on something to let the urine flow through and to a lessor extent, any bowel movements.  Skip the bedding. At first it gets wet, and later it can be chewed into choking hazards. A wire grid in the bottom will help keep the puppy up out of accidents at first. They are available with the crates, but expensive and hard to find. A piece of closely spaced wire closet shelving from a home supply place is cheaper. I am now using a plastic vegetable bin with plenty of holes drilled in the bottom. It helps block off part of the crate for the smaller puppy.

Ordinarily it helps to confine the puppy in a small space to restrict its movement.  The dog may be happier in its den than loose in the house.  It relaxes, it feels safe in its den.  It rests, the body slows down reducing the need for water and relieving its self.  In addition to putting something in her sleeping space, it may help in this case, to give her enough room to urinate in one area and sleep in another.
