Question
I have a blue nose pit 4 yrs,and a Russian shepherd 2 yrs, both spade females.  Every 3 to 4 months they get into a fight.  The shepherd is the alpha dog.  Both obedience trained, and live in and sleep in the house.  They have a yard to run & Play.  When they fight, they do not listen to any commands.  I am home with them most of the time. If I take one for a walk, they will fight upon return, so no more walking!  Please help, what can I do?

Answer
Sharon,
You need to be the alpha of these two dogs.  They cannot take a drink of water without permission from you.  Even then, though, you have two dogs who will fight with each other.  Shepherds will fight each other and I guess you know that pit bulls are the same.  Your second dog should have been a male.  Vets will tell you that spaying calms them down, but it is not true when their instincts are to fight each other.

You only have a few choices.

You can keep them separate at all times.  One in a bedroom, one in the living room.  Or crated in different crates and give them individual attention.

two:  you can give one of them up, find a good home for one.

three:  go to a professional trainer, (ONE WHO DEALS WITH DOG AGGRESSION) but a lot relies on how you will handle them and if you can learn to be "boss".  Remember that pits were bred to fight so you will be working against basic instinct which is the hardest thing to do.
This type of training is the hardest training to do without someone else to handle the other dog. This is why I dont seem real positive about this. It is a two person job and the other person has to know what they are doing.

you can try medication  prozac or clomipramine, but I have to tell you that the drugs didn't work on my alpha female.  The only thing that worked on her was constant, and I mean constant training so she wouldn't attack the other dog immediately and I could tell her to stay somewhere while the other was in the room.  But I could never get to the point where I could trust her alone with the other female (her daughter even).  I have to be there and on top of things all the time, which is tiring.

So these are the options you have.  Please see if you can watch Cesar Millan, either on dvd or TV and you will understand a lot more about how the dogs minds work.  His videos are great.  He also has some books out which may give  you even more insight.
