Geriatric dog keeps whining, moaning and barking

Question
I have an 11 yr old female English Bulldog that whines and moans while sleeping and while awake will bark at the wall, her bed, at the sky, basically everything and anything.  It started off slowly and we tried to ignore the barking, but it's now becoming non-stop while she's awake.  She does it inside and will bark continuously while she's outside.  She was to the vet about a month ago and had full blood work done, which came back normal.  She's on Glucosamine and Chondroitin for a hip/leg injury she sustained as a young dog.  Other than that, she's a healthy old dog.  However, my husband and I think that she's losing her hearing (we often have to tap her to get her attention).  So, we're assuming that this sensory deprivation is the root cause of her constant barking.  I don't believe the normal barking behavior remedies will work as there doesn't seem to be a stimulus that sets her off.  And, as she is an old dog, I don't want to subject her to a shock collar or spray collar.  Is there something we can do to provide more comfort for her or more stimulus so that she doesn't feel the need to bark?  As a side note, she does seem to bark less when she can see us, but having our 3 other dogs around doesn't seem to make a difference.

Answer
Hello Jennifer and thanks for your quesiton.

Your husband and yourself could be on track with your assumption. It could also be a bit of senility from age.

You might want to try some of the herbal remedies for anxiety to help calm her. She may be feeling some anxiousness due to her lack of hearing. Rescue remedy is a pretty good product, but doesn't work with every dog.

I wish I could be of more help.
