Question

yorkipoo pink ball
We just adopted a yorkie poo 2 days ago. After we took her home I realized she had dry poop on her butt. I washed it off and found a pink ball that looked like it was sticking out of her rectum. I have massaged it and placed warm water on her butt, it did not bother her. It seems more to bother her when I pull her tail (which is cut short). She has eaten and had 3 bowel movements, all normal. I have seen her 2x rubbing her butt on the flow yet her health records show she was dewormed two weeks ago, or given medicine and check for worms. It seems more like its more like a polyp. Should I try some lubricant? Taker her temp and push it back in? Try to take her temp and see if it goes back in? Determining that it is part of her rectum or intestines. Or will she need to be taken to the vet? I am a single momma that is a full time student so I will have to go to a humane society or such for assistance. If I can do something at home I would prefer. At this time it doesn't seem to bother her.

Answer
Hi Lailii,

Your puppy's condition isn't something you should be trying to self-diagnose or self-treat. You need to have your puppy examined by a veterinarian, and you should not put it off.

You could be dealing with a rectal prolapse. Early treatment of a rectal prolapse is crucial. If the tissue appears to still be alive and not too traumatized, your veterinarian will try to push it back into normal position. A suture is then placed around the anus to make sure the tissue does not come out again. The suture must be loose enough to allow stool to pass out. This suture is generally left in for 48 hours and then removed. If you wait too long before seeing the vet, the rectal tissue can dry up, and surgery could be need to amputate the damaged part of the intestine.

There is no home care for rectal prolapse. Keep the tissue moistened (use a dab of Vaseline) and do not allow your puppy to lick or chew at the area.

Best of luck,
Patti
