Toilet training my dog?

20 10:38:14

Question
My eigth month old miniature poodle is trained to relieve herself on a wee-wee pad inside my appartement. I have heard that it is possible to train a cat to replace the litter box by the toilet bowl and I was wondering if it would be possible to train my dog similarly. Obviously, there is a problem with the toilet seat being a little too large for her and for that I thought I could put a child toilet seat that would be smaller. Have you ever heard of this being done for a dog?

Thank you

Answer
I think I have seen questions like yours before, but do not remember anybody claiming success.  I find it unlikely you could train a dog or a cat to straddle a hole and squat.  I would be more likely to try a grid or something.  I have used them for a long time in the crate with a new puppy to keep them up out of urine.  I was just out looking for a replacement for the one I had to discard last year.  New puppy tonight.  I bought a kitchen storage bin on legs. I am going to drill the bottom full of holes, and put it in the crate for the puppy.  They make grates just for crates, but they are expensive and hard to find, and may not keep a longer haired puppy up high enough.  I also looked at the sifting kitty litter boxes.  May have bought one if it wasn't $10.

I suggest looking at the kitchen ware for something you could put over the seat, and let the dog use with the waste falling through.  Perhaps a ramp or some steps for it to get up there.  Start with the pad up there.  Once the dog catches on to using the pad up there, then take the pad away, perhaps making it smaller and smaller until it is gone.  Use lots of praise for using the place you want.

Please post back and let me know how it works if you try it.
