Question
I have a 1 year rescued standard. Face is very silver, with ears that are mixed silver and black. Legs are light in front (silver to brown) dark on back. What is the age they finish turning...if he is going to?
thanks much.

Answer
Hello Nan,
It sounds like your boy is going to be a Blue Standard Poodle.  I have a 1 yr old Standard Poodle, "Riot", that is out of 2 Silver (line bred Silver all the way back) Poodles and when I shaved him down yesterday, I found out he is a Blue.  I had a feeling he was because from the middle of his back to his tail he had a brown tinge to his coat.  They say that "Brown in the hair, Blue Beware" and I guess its true.  Riots face is silver right down to the skin when I shave his face and he has silver patches in his ears, but I am positive that he is a Blue.  The whole of his body is a Blackish/Dark Blue color even though his legs are more of a Dark Silver color.
Silver Poodles never really stop changing color (nor do any of the Fading Gene colors such as Red, Silver, and Brown).  They are born Black and just keep getting lighter.  They may get to be a light Silver around age 2-3 though.  It also depends on their Background.  My Riot's mother is a Dark Silver, and his Dad (whom I also own) is a Light Silver.  Riots brother "Smoke" (I own him also) is going to be a Silver, though I think he may be a dark Silver like his mom because he still hasn't "cleared" to a lighter Silver yet.

If you would like to see Pictures of Riot, Smoke and their Parents, "Striker" and "Brooke" you can send me an e-mail at MsTopkdog@yahoo.com and I will send you some.  You can see the brown in Riots hair and (as soon as I get some good pics) I will send you the most recent pics of him since I shaved him.

I hope this has helped you some.  If you have other questions about your Poodle, please feel free to ask.
