eating poop!

Question
We just got our beautiful 6 month old standard poodle girl,  and everything is great except for one awful problem.  Everytime she goes outside she tries to eat any "poop" that has not been picked up.  We have 2 other dogs and are very good about picking up after them but sometimes miss one or two.  As soon as we say no! she stops.  I have heard about this but have never owned a dog with this problem. HELP!

Answer
Hello Gail,
Yuck, yes that is an awful problem, but it can be helped.  There are products on the market that when placed in the dogs food, will make the poo less appetizing for the dog (you would think that it wouldn't be appealing anyway).
One is called Forbid, and the other is Distaste.  They are both powders that you add to your dogs food then just let it pass on through.
Your local Pet Store should carry it.

Keeping the yard picked up is another solution, but I know that its hard to keep up with.  Aside from giving the dog bad breath (no kisses for awhile), if one dog has parasites, the other dog can get them, the stomach acids in the poo can be bad on the teeth and there is bacteria in the poo that isn't good for the dog that eats it.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
