Question
I have a 10 month old female husky that is about to start her second heat.  I would like to breed her but don't know how old she should be before I start.  Any suggestions of when she should be bred and how to go about doing it?

Answer
Dear John,
You should for no reason breed a female husky until she is at least 2 years of age.  If she is a registered dog the association requires 2 years as the minimum age. Breed earlier than this and no papers will be issued for your puppies no matter how good the parentage.
But the real reason behind this is a sound one, a bitch is not fully mature until 2 years old. She is still growing hereself at 10 months, if you bred with her now you would most certainally stunt her potential. Give her time to mature and she will have the best pups. Remember too just because you can beed her should you? Ask yourself some hard questions, is she up to standard? If I breed how can I be sure the puppies will all get good homes? Can I improve the breed by breeding with a certain male?
I hope this is helpful.
