My Female Siberian Husky Has A Serious Eating Problem!

20 9:11:22

Question
Mia (my 10 month old Sibe puppy) wont eat her food that we give her. My mum and dad have threatened to get rid of her, because we've tried everything and she wont eat. Well she does eat, but the most she has eaten is about 7-10 mouth fulls, then just laid down on her bed and looked quiet depressed or tired. My mum says thats she doesnt want to take her to the vet just yet, but otherwise shes healthy. As soon as I take her out for walks, shes her lively puppy self again, but she tried to eat anything she finds! At home she will beg for our food and eat that, but only rarely. It has gotten worse over the past month or two, and we're all very concerned about her health and well-being. I know you probably want to know what we've been feeding her, at the moment we're feeding her on a specialised working dog biscuit that my dad heats of with a little bit of water or vegetable juice. She eats a little bit of it but not much at all. We've also tried caned pedigree dog food with vegetables and jelly, at first she liked it but now she will only eat a tiny amount. When we first got her, her breeder gave us some biscuit, But Mia wouldnt eat that and we had to  call the vet. Since then we have tried a few other food brands, even pigs ears! Which she just buried outside in the garden. Another food I forgot to mention was cooked beef steak and chicken bones. Mia would eat the steak, after recovering it out of the garden after a day or two. She has eaten the chicken wings, bone and all, but only two-three times. We feed her after walks (she has two a day) at the moment, and we've been trying not to feed her too often or give her tit-bits/treats to encourage her to eat her own food. Mia just doesnt seem to be interesting in eating, my mum has said that it just seems as though she doesnt want to eat, that she wants to die. Im pretty sure that this isnt the case, but we really need your help! She is about 33kg's just in the ideal weight area. I understand that you are probably very busy, but if you could reply ASAP otherwise I'm afraid that my parents will sell her, we all love her very very much but this is just starting to cost too much! Many thanks. x

Answer
This is tough to answer, but keep in mind that Siberian Huskies have extremely efficient metabolisms and don't need to eat much food.  In fact, it is not uncommon for a Siberian to go a few days without eating much.  My dogs are fed 1 cup of food per day, 1/2 cup in the morning, and the other half at night.  We supplement that with a little bit of cheese (maybe a tablespoon total).  They eat that, and do great.  For a purebred Siberian 33 kgs is actually overweight - they should be around 35-50 lbs, or 15-23 kgs for a female.

If the dog is acting playful and energetic, especially on walks, I wouldn't be too concerned.  If she isn't eating at all, adding a little bit of low sodium chicken broth to kibble can help, as can trying a chicken and rice soup.  But otherwise, I'm not seeing any real problems here yet.
