Answer
Hi Teresa,

A dog's heat cycle lasts for typically 3 weeks(though can be longer or shorter, depending on the dog).  During this cycle, the female will generally spot during the first several days.

When you first detect this spotting, or male dogs paying more attention to her than usual, you should begin to take action.  Basically, there are only two absolutely effective ways to prevent pregnancy: Segregation and spaying.

The action that I am referring to above would be the segregation.  Keep her away from any potential mates from the time you notice the heat cycle beginning until the cycle ends.  The problem with this, though, is that it may be hard to figure when the cycle ends.

Spaying, which is the recommended course of action, is ultimately the best option.  Not only will you not have to worry about unwanted litters, the health benefits for the dog may also increase.  Granted, this isn't an option if you plan on breeding, but breeding a bulldog is something that only experienced bulldog owners should undertake with the assistance of a knowledgeable vet.

Anyway, I hope that this helps.  Good luck!
