bulldog limping

Question
Hi, I have an 5 year Old English bulldog.  He got up the other day and would not walk.  His rear leg looked like it was having spasms so I massaged it and gave him a doggie aspirin and some glucosamine. He did just fine after an hour. He played quite a bit yesterday and this morning he's limping again. I have noticed he gets this pain when it's cold.  What could be causing it and how can I manage his pain?

Answer
The first instance could have been just a pinched nerve from the way he happened to be sleeping. He's at an age when his hips may start to bother him and the glucosamine will help and should be given on a daily basis. Bulldogs have terrible hips. You can also give him an aspirin a day when he's limping or in the cold weather. He should be allowed to exercise as much as he wants, not forced, and he will only do what doesn't cause him pain. Limiting his exercise will only make things worse.

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  My server has been down.
