My Cyrus...

Question
Hello.
I just wanted to share my story about my bully Cyrus...he passed away Saturday, just 2 days before his bday. He would have been 1 today. Cyrus started vomitting about a week ago and he stopped eating. Last Weds. nite I woke up from his cries and when I checked on him, he had urinated in his crate. I cleaned him up and at 7am, he did it again. The next day I took him into a vet and she checked him over and assumed he had a UTI. She put him on Clamamox and told me to bring in a clean urine sample on Saturday b/c his glucose level was 330..which seemed too high for his age. He vomitted everything (including water) and didn't eat for 3 days. We tried everything to help him and when Saturday morning came, we rushed him to the office in hopes that he would be ok after a shot or something. To make a long story short, Cyrus went to the ER to get a IV and insulin (we found out he was diabetic) but within 4 hours, he went into cardiac arrest, had kidney failure and DIED!! I can't believe he is gone but I just wanted to ask if there is something we could have done to proling his life or if any signs were there before last week. He seemed so healthy and happy it's hard to grasp the fact that he is gone....have you ever heard of a diabetic bulldog passing before he turns 1??? We are hurting right now however, we are relieved that Cyrus is not suffereing anymore...

Answer
Chances are you wouldn't have had any early signs that this was going on until it was too late. It is very unusual for a dog to die of diabetes at such a young age however. My very first bulldog died of a heart attack at 13 months of age so I came related to your sadness.

Please accept my condolences and know that you did all you could for Cyrus.
