Question
My 1 year old English Bulldog has had two patella operations and with the last operation he got aspiration pneumonia.  Since he has had two other bouts with pneumonia.  Most recently he has had this wreching, phlemmy cough and will wake up when sleep and stretch his neck and clear is throat.  The vet has him on Tremil(spelling?) now, is this common for bulldog to be phlemmy and is there anything I can do to cut the phlem?  Thank you.

Answer
Once a Bulldog gets pneumonia, it's next to impossible to get rid of. First of all, get a squeezy lemon from the grocery store. When your dog sounds particularly congested, take the lemon, put it in the size of his mouth and point it toward the back of his throat and give him a good squeeze. He'll hate it but it will cause him to salivate and clean out the gunk in his throat. Plus, it won't hurt him at all.

You might consider putting him on echinachia and golden seal which you can find in the vitamin section of any store. It will help boost his emmune system. Give him the human dosage.

Secondarily, if you can get him healthy, it would be wise if you can have pallet reduction surgery performed on him.  I know the poor guy has had his share of surgeries, but the pallet surgery would allow him to breathe better and perhaps keep him healthier longer.  The reason Bulldogs get recurring upper respiratory infections is that they can't cough up the crap in their lungs due to their elongated soft pallets.
