Question
hi  i have a English bulldog who at just over a year old started having quite severe seizures, which went into a repeated pattern. she has been on phenobarbital for the last 5 months which seem to keep the fits under control. what are the dangers of this drug for her. she had an operation at 11 months old under anesthetic to remove her tail it was a cork screw shape creating deep skin fold which seeped puss and stank terribly. we have no real idea how the fits started or why .

Answer
Hi Hayley:  I would get a second opinion on her condition.  Since she had surgery and then began to have seizsures, it could be related to the anesthesia.

As for Phenobarbital, it is an excellent "old time" drug that is many times the only choice.  There are a number of other things you can do along with the drugs.....

Holistic measures:  accupuncture with Gold:

Gold bead implants are a permanent form of acupuncture; gold beads are implanted on the acupuncture points, and provide long-term stimulation of the points.

The gold beads are very tiny, about the size of pinhead, or the point of a ballpoint pen.

Gold implants are used because gold is non-reactive with the body.

I have known a few that have had the gold beads and it has helped lessend the seizures.
Something to think about!
