4 month old male potty training

Question
Hello. We have had our bully for 6 weeks now, and he still urinates in his crate every time he goes in. When he is out of his crate, he urinates every 45 minutes, sometimes more often. We give him water 3 times a day, as much as he wants in a 10 minute span. None later than 6PM. We keep him on the same schedule every day.

My question is, is this abnormal? Should he be house trained by now?

Thank you for your response.

Answer
Well, I have to tell you this is a weird schedule for a puppy this age.  First of all, he's probably gulping down more water than he ever really needs if he's only getting it 3 times a day and for 10 minutes.  I'm not surprised he can't hold his urine.

He should have water available at all times during the day. If he's being crated for extended periods and only has time to drink when he's let out, this may be part of the problem.

The main thing is, he's a baby.  At this age, I wouldn't be surprised if he was still peeing in his crate occasionally under the best of circumstances. I never expect puppies to be house trained until they're at least 6 months old and sometimes longer. Each dog is an individual and some are slower learners than others, especially Bulldogs.

If you go to the free water system, it may take a few days before he realizes he doesn't have to chug down the bowl in 10 minutes.  Give him time to make the adjustment and see how this works for you. Still pick up the bowl at 6 p.m.

Patience, determination, kindness and consistency.....HE'S A BABY!
