Question
My wife and I were just given a 4 year old English Bulldog female by a vet friend who said the owner did not want her.  She is fixed and Im not sure but may have been part of a minor puppy mill.  She shows no aggression at all, but wants to sort of hide in a corner and is not really friendly, and acts somewhat scared.  What should we do other than show lots of love and attention, mixed with patience?

Answer
The dog has probably had little or no socialization. She doesn't know how to interact with people and has no idea what to expect from them either in a home situation like yours.

Patience is the key. Reassure her at every juncture, even something as simple as walking from one room to another  "good girl!"  Food is always an ice breaker when it comes to Bulldogs.  Treats for everything good she does. Understanding for everything she does wrong.  Time and love will heal just about everything.

Best of luck to you.
