Question

Babe babysitting
I have a 12 yr old female English bulldog.  She is in the prelim stages of congestive heart failure and on Baytril and Predinisone.  She is fed a senior lamb and rice dog food, but has reduced her own intake to about 1/2 cup a day...of course she is fairly inactive.  In the last 2 days, she has started something new...while sleeping, her whole body straightens out, and she has a huge panic look on her face.  We will go to her immediately and bring her head up.  She then takes a huge breath and then just starts to relax.  It is not a seizure, for I am familiar with those with my Queensland I have.  She seems to be alert and visually alert, like she knows where she is and who we are...but I have no idea what is triggering this reaction.  My only other thought is that she has stopped breathing and her body is going into some reaction to try to get a breath.  She has lived a wonderful life (thinks she is a ranch dog like the queensland :-)) but I want to be realistic and don't want to cause her any undo pain.  At this point, it is about her and not my own hearfelt feelings.  What are your thoughts?

Answer
Jessica - Thank you for the wonderful photo of Babe!  I am wondering if she is having some loss of breath ( apnea)???   I am also wondering why she is not on a water pill like lasix?
The lasix and reduce the fluilds around the heart and help her breath easy.
Please call your vet right away and ask for an order of Lasix.  I am sure they will want to see her for a visit.  I believe she may have more fluid build up around the heart.

BEST wishes!
