Bulldog Puppy Growls Bites

Question
I have a female bulldog puppy that is 10 weeks old.  I got her when she was 7.5 weeks.  I know bulldogs love to chew, but I'm afraid there's more to her chewing then just playing.  She chases after our feet and bites.  When we try to pet her, she bites our hands.  If I hold her down and tell her NO!, she growls and gets up and continues to bark at me.  She seems to be very independent.  She never wants to sleep or lay next to me and never wants to be held or pet.  The more I tell her NO!, the more she tries to test me by barking and growling.  Is this normal behavior?

Answer
This is normal "pack behavior" for a puppy this age. Keep in mind the only reference a puppy has for social behavior is the interaction with it's siblings, that being, growling, biting and barking. However, this is a very independent puppy just the same.

If you're not crate training her, that would be a place to start. When she tries to bite you, take her by the scruff of the neck and give her a good shake, hard, if she complains, that's fine. With a resounding "NO" too. Then give her one of her toys to chew on. You need to divert her attention to something of hers instead of your body parts. If she doesn't accept the consequences, put her in her crate for a 15 minute time out.

If she continues to bite, even after your efforts, the next step may seem a bit extreme, but it works. When she bites hard, take her paw in your mouth and bite her back until she cries. Then growl at her very seriously and walk away. This usually does the trick after a couple of times.

Keep in mind, she's just a baby too. It would be a very good idea to get her into a puppy kindergarten class or definitely obedience classes when she's a little older. She needs to know that she's not running the show and she needs to respect you.
