My cats eye injury

Question
My cat stinky came home with a bloody eye.we believe that he was attacked by a dog or another cat. we took him to a local vet just to get him looked at. we cant afford to give him proper treatment. the doctor said that the injury may heal because the eye is still there. my question is is there anything we can do to make it a more comfortable healing process for stinky. also should we try to clean it our selfs and if it might be OK what could we do to make it as painless as possible for him. thank you for taking the time to read this, your truly marcella and danny

Answer
Didn't the vet give him anything for the eye at all? It will heal, but that doesn't mean he will see out of it. Eye injuries are extremely painful and without the proper medication this cat is going to be in a lot of pain until then. I am glad you took him to a vet but I don't understand why he didn't give you some eye ointment at least to treat it with.

Cleaning it is not a good idea unless it has pus running out of it or turns green or the flies get to it. Some people use a brand new tube of Neosporin for wounds like this as it is sterile as long as it hasn't been used. They put a small ribbon of it across the eye several times a day. I have no idea if it works but it can't hurt him.

Personally I would never let an eye injury just heal on it's own with out some veterinary prescribed medication at least. He could have at least given you that!

I guess you are just going to have to let nature take its course and see how it goes. I would get some saline solution like you clean contact lenses with and see if you can gently squirt some of that onto the eye daily to keep it moist and help it to heal. Moisture is very important for an eye to heal.

Hope for the best!
