My cats litter box

Question
Why is my cats litter box smelling so bad and what can I do because since he turned 9 months old it has started to smell bad and I make sure to dump out ALL the litter when I change it. I change it every 2 or 3 weeks but lately I feel like I need to change it everyday. I use baking soda to help with smell. He normally eats at night and will finish off a bowl. He is a domestic house cat and has only had his first set of shots. Help

Answer
I am guessing that this is your first cat because a cat's litter box needs to be cleaned out daily and ALL of the litter changed at LEAST once a week, not every two or three weeks!

It smells because of the ammonia buildup from his urine. It stays in the litter and builds and builds in there until you clean it out completely.

My cat spends most days outside but I still clean her box out every week and I clean out all of the stool every other day. She eats Science Diet only so her stool is very small and has no smell at all.

Your cats food is going to be a major cause of stinky, running, gooey stool. Get him on to some Science Diet and you will see a huge change in his stool and the smell.

The third thing that can make a MALE cat's urine smell bad is if he isn't neutered. Tom cat urine is one of the strongest things you will ever smell. By nine months he should be neutered and he also needs another set of vaccinations-and a rabies, if he hasn't had one yet. Even indoor cats NEED to get a rabies shot. Neutering your cat will make the tom-cat urine smell go away.

So get him neutered if he isn't, change his food to Science Diet and clean out his box once a week or more.

Baking soda isn't going to help if none of the above aren't done.
