Question
QUESTION: i will call and order the nuvet powder or wafers in the morning.

are you saying that the cranberry powder you are suggesting is the same as the renal support [the two main ingredients epa and dha]. initially, i believe you said i could get the cranberry in a health food store. are you saying the product you are recommending is better.

sorry for all the queries, but i want to know exactly what will help her beginning-to-fail kidneys!!!

thank you

ANSWER: We have had great luck with the one I mentioned from Revival Animal web site:
If you were happy with the other Renal support, yours was a good brand, you can go back to that too.
Up to you ...
The NuVET also helps with renal support but with different ingredients.

QUESTION: hi,

i know you are tired of hearing from me, but i wanted three i hope quick clarifications.

i ordered the nuvet today...they said to use 1 tsp. you said 1/2 i am going with the 1/2 that you said. correct???

the cranberry powder you recommended looked good and i was ready to order it, but they want $9.oo for shipping and handling. in your opinion, is this better than the one that i could get in a store?? if so, i will order it asap.

last question [famous last words]  would you mind explaining the rationale behind grain free treats? is it detrimental to the kidneys??? just trying to learn and i do appreciated the education.

ANSWER: Hi - Glad you ordered the NuVET - yes, you are correct about the 1/2 teaspoon or 1/2 wafer per day for your dog.  Other dogs, of your pet's size, would take more than 1/2 teaspoon per day.

The gals at NuVET are not informed on the Phosphorous levels needed with kidney/ renal clients.
The gals were just giving you the dosage that a Normal dog without kidney failure should be taking each day.  They don't have the medical background on this subject.

I will educate the office gals on the process of NuVET and home-cooking for renal and liver clients.  Sorry, they gave you the wrong info...That is why I am here.
Again, they did not know about the requirements for renal dogs or cats.

Cranberry - WOW - I don't think I have every paid more than 6.50 for shipping thru Revival Animal health...  9.00 sounds high... Give them a call and ask why it is so high.
I get 3-5 pound of products for 6.50 to 9.00
I don't think the cranberry product is that large?

As for grains -  Dogs with any medical problems should eat as little grain as possible.
Many grains just add more stress on the body to digest.

I like the Innova EVO grain free treats ( small bites - don't get the large ones)
Also, the SoJo folks make a nice grain free treat -
see here : 2 kinds....

QUESTION: hi marie,

thank you for writing me back so quickly
i promise not to bother you again so soon, but i forgot to ask you something...the reason i spelled out the food i used to feed is because this new diet is alot less food, and i wondered if that mattered.

also, i have been feeding the omega 3s for a few months now. it is also the same time when i introduced the dairy [cottage cheese, yogurt and cheese] and tofu.  and coincidentally [or not], it is also when the dry patches of skin started. but the point i am making is that the omega 3 do not seem to have helped with the skin problem unfortunately

why, oh why, marie, would i be so lucky to have the blood levels drop if i am only changing the food by cooking and giving smaller portions...do you really believe that will help the blood levels and the alleged early stages of kidney failure? [along with the miracle nuvet?]

one last thing i forgot to mention, that you may find interesting....the reason i first went to the vet was because i noticed the increased water intake.[at which point he diagnosed early kidney failure] lately, even though it is hot, my baby is not drinking extra...in fact, my baby is not drinking ANY water [except what is in each of the 3 little meals] is that a good sign or a bad sign???

p.s. i tried to write you back at your email, but it failed. is that because i am only allowed to write you once a week?

Answer
Hi- No problem.... I believe you were feeding some meats that are not appropriate for a pet with kidney troubles or UTIs.    I recall there were something like the lima beans, which are not good to continue for a kideny diet.

I approve all the following to feed in this diet for Kidney Disease dogs:
( no more raw bones for a snack)

( Glad you ordered the NuVET)

Please do start on the NuVET powder supplement as it balances out home cooking...
NuVET info here:
http://www.nuvet.com/81098
YOU are looking for the powder of nuvet plus:  ( don't worry about veggies because you will be giving the NuVet supplement)  (minimal veggies are fine)
( I did note what you can give "x-tra" per day to fill up your baby:)

white rice - Not the instant ...that is processed

potato, boiled with skin

rice, long-grain, cooked

No beens ***( lima and such ) too much Phos

GREEN beens are fine and low in Phos  **( YOU can feed this as a snack too.... X-tra is fine)

Broccoli is fine  *** you can give a little x-tra in one meal per day

Cabbage is good

Carrotts are fine, too   *** you can give some carrotts as a snack or with meals ( x-tra is fine)

sweet potato baked ( not mashed )  plain baked

Alway mush up the veggies - or Grate them - Hard to digest in whole form.

Feed 2 - 3 very small meals per day -  small means about  1/2 cup per meal.

Just start out and see how you do ..
**** If he is very hungry add a little more food to each meal.
~~~~~~~ ( No problem adding a little to each meal - just see how he does...)~~~~~~~~~
Treats -
Only Grain free :  ( grain free dog biscuts)
Anything in moderation that is a grain free treat from a quality company.
Did you see the SoJo dog food grain free TREATS -
They are small so he could have 4-6 per day...
As long as they are grain free.
Cranberry - why don't you get the one I have had great luck with - thru Revival Animal Health:
I can only approve products that have worked for my clients..
If you don't have the link - I can send it again.
Make sure you add more water into his foods - if possible -
He should be drinking some from his water dish.  Glad the increased water intake has subsided.
You do want some water intake... Try an ice cube in the water - just 1 to make it fresh and cold.
The blood level should drop if you follow everything and keep him infection free...  They tend to get Urinary infections and stones.
So- keep on adding some moisture to all meals.
You need to PLAY with the feeding amounts - a little more at each meal of meat and veggies is fine.
Also, you are not going to give anything with grain-  As a treat it will be grain-free treats or a carrott.
Innova EVO - Wellness Core - and the SoJos make some nice grain free treats.
Keep me posted - My e-mail should work fine...
