-----Question-----
I have four female fantail guppies and one male.  I have had them in the same tank for about a month now.  I was wondering how long should it be before I will see the females start to get a darker gravid spot?
-----Answer-----
Hi,
Gravid spots should only form when the fish is pregnant, as it is actually the fry's (offspring's) eyes developing.
If you want your guppies to breed, I would test the pH of the tank water. They prefer a slightly higher pH, between 7.0 and 7.8 is preferable. They also like slightly harder water.
Also, test for nitrite and ammonia. if they are over 0.0, do regular water changes (forty percent every few days) until it goes down.
Good luck,
Kathryn

Answer
Hi,
It really depends. When they are fully comfortable with their surroundings, they will breed. Do daily water changes of 20 to 30 percent to increase the chances of them breeding.
There is no way to tell when they are about to breed, you just need to make sure everything is perfect for them, as I said in my last post, and they should hopefully breed.
Remember, you need somewhere to get rid of the fry, like a local fish shop, because they will inbreed, causing deformed fry, if left together too long.
Good luck,
Kathryn
