Guppy after birth

Question
Hello Chelsey,
I've got a beautiful guppy who just gave birth.  She seemed fine for about a day, then her color (around the gravid spot near her tail fin) went very pale on only one side.  I immediately moved her to a sick-tank with anti-fungal medication, but her condition has slightly worsened since then.  Any ideas?
Thank you much!

Answer
hey Rebecca,
I'm not sure what's happening to this poor little guppy. I have had female fish died in the past a few days after giving birth, I think sometimes they just get worn out.

Make sure she is eating, and feed her multiple times a day. You should try keeping her away from males until she is better to try to prevent her getting pregnant again, in case her body can't handle it yet, although guppies might be able to have multiple litters from just mating once I'm not sure (i know other live bearing fish can). If anything, the litter will be smaller.
A lot of the time mother fish can't eat or eat very little toward the tail end of pregnancy because of the lack of space left for digestin, and almost anything they do consume goes to the babies, so she could possibly be "starving" from that. This is why I reccomend extra feedings and giving her as much as she will eat (without a bunch of food sinking to the bottom and polluting the tank).

Also, the discoloration could just be from giving birth, but normally there isn't only a change on one side. Maybe she didn't give birth to some of the babies, which is a possibility.

I hope this helps, even though we aren't sure of what she actually has, this could still help. I hope she gets better and has more healthy litters of babies. Good luck raising the little guys!
best wishes, chelsey
