Hydras

Question
I set up a ten gallon tank for my Danios to breed in when I noticed the two females swell up quite heavily. I took all of them out after a few days and noticed about 10 baby fish swimming around in the Java Moss. Well I also noticed something that looked like a tiny squid (which turns out to be a Hydra)and it had a fish in its grasp. I don't know where it came from nor what to do about it, I know that Gouramies (not spelled correctly lol)are known to eat them, but they would eat the baby fish aswell and I only have the other 30 gallon tank where I keep the adult fish. Is there another way I could get rid of the Hydras without taking out all the baby fish? I would rather not try to take all the baby fish out and put them into a small 2-5 gallon tank for the time being, but I need some help on this problem. Thanks for your advice!

Answer
Kevin:

gosh... the only way I know of to get rid of hydra is to raise the tank temperature to about 90 degrees... I don't think your fry will tolerate that at all.  The only thing I can think of is for you to remove all of the plant material and try a new plant.  Hydra attach themselves to the plant stalks... you could try to add some aquarium salt ... you can get that at your local aquarium... other then that... I don't really have any advice for you except to move the fish... or remove the plants.... dave
