Betta Fry Water Level

Question
Hello Barb its Kyle again,
The betta fry are doing great! there now about 3 weeks of age and i was wondering if it would be a good time to raise the water level to full in the fish tank? If not, i have a filter i would like to start useing, its the one that hangs over the edge of  the tank and spills clean water into the tank that it sucked up from the tank. lol, Or would that be too much of a current and would sweep away the fry? Also, i tried feeding the betta fry crushed flake food and some starved to death, then i switched over to finly crushed betta pebbles, still didnt work. So now im back where i started with the few fry i have left and have been feeding them egg yolk. I never realized how durty the egg yolk was, and that is why i need to use the filter now.
Thanks In Advance Again!
Kyle

Answer
Hi Kyle,
I am sorry about the late reply. I have been very busy and did not have any time to log on.

I would not start using the filter, as the fry will get sucked into the filter easily, and the water drops (which are like huge waterfall to them!) will just kill the babies. Bettas are not made for strong currents and even adult bettas can be struggling through the water drops. There are some gravel that absorbs the ammonia and I would definitely use that for the fry. Bettas are sensitive (not in a deadly way) to ammonia and their fins will burn. The gravel is supposed to last for about a month and it comes very handy for any bettas.

Definitely raise the water level! Omg I thought you already did so I did not even think that! lol I should have remembered!

Hmm.. I don't exactly know about the fry not eating the crushed flakes. It is probably because it is floating and they are not used to eating floating foods. Try dipping in water before you give them, so they will sink slowly. Best would be to give newly hatched brine shrimp, if possible. The size of the betta fry will vary depending on how well you took care of it. Faster the growth the better! :]]]

I do not know if I would keep giving them egg yolk. As they get bigger, they will start to ignore small foods. If you are sure that they are eating, you can keep using them, but keep on eye on them.

My best recommendation is newly hatched brine shrimp. If not, Hitari makes freeze-dried foods. It is in a big container. Try the brine shrimp. You can smash it really fine and hopefully they will eat it.

But yea.. Get the ammonia absorbing gravel because as the egg yolk and other foods rot, great amount of ammonia is going to come. That's not good. :]]]]

Good Luck! I would like to know when the fry are 3/4 inches long!
