Substrate for Fresh water fish

I was wondering what type of Substrate do fresh water fish prefer.

It greatly depends on what type of fish you want to keep. Regular aquarium gravel found at any pet store will work nicely for most tropical fish. Freshwater Cichlids prefer a finer gravel as they like to dig. Natural colored gravel works best. Brightly colored gravel can hurt the fishes eyes under fluorescent lighting.
