getting some new fish

Question
Hi!
I just bought a 10 gallon, warm water, freshwater tank.  Sorry but i don't really know the Ph levels or stuff because i don't know how to.  This is my first time with a fish tank so i have a few questions.  I have got my tank set up with gravel, water, a heater, and a filter but no decorations.  That is all the equipment i have and I am going to buy those things that sucks up water from the tank.  Do i need anything else?  Also, are decorations needed?  My tank has been sitting there for about a day now with no fish but i'm going to buy some fish.  I'm thinking of buying a male guppy and then a female and then breeding them.  Do i need another tank to do that?  Will guppies be a good fish to have or are there any other good fish to have?  Well, that's it.  Can you give me any tips that will make keeping fish easier.

Answer
Hi

Rather than worry about your Ph test for kh. Your kh for Guppy's should be between 5 to 7. Ideally your kh level should be up before you put your fish into your new tank.

Decorations aren't needed but having said that your fish will thank you for putting some things in for them to swim around and in.

You won't need another tank to breed your Guppy's in but you will have to careful what else you put in with your Guppys. Some fish will have a tendancy to nip the fins of Guppys, so those types of fish should be avoided (your LFS should be able to tell you what fish to avoid when choosing more, just remember to tell them that you have Guppys). Also if you do end breeding Guppy's some fish that you may or may not put in with them may eat their babies, so just be aware.

Start off with a few fish to cycle your tank first. The ratio should be one male Guppy to about 3 to 5 females.
