Question
You recently answered my question on my pleco who floats at the top of
the tank. In answer to your questions, I only just found out that they
need a special diet the petstore had told me they live on algae. He grew
up on flake food and recently I added algae wafers. I started him on peas
and zucchini after your respone and he's gone crazy for it. he does have
a very swollen belly that seems to have been that way for at least 2
months. Thanks again for all of your help. Vicki

Answer
Dear Vicki,
Poor baby...It must have been the bad diet that has caused his condition. I've heard of it happening before with plecos.

But it's not your fault, the darn petstore should have known better and given you the proper advice! Plecos are vegetarians and algae eaters, but usually there isn't enough algae in any tank that can keep them well fed enough. Plecos enjoy Cucumber, Zucchini of course, plus Romain lettuce, Iceberg Lettuce, Spinach, Collards, Kale, Broccoli, and even Sweet potatoes! Algae wafers are great as a supplement still.

The swollen belly is also a big giveaway - He needs more fiber! I hope the continued feeding of vegetables will help his system and eventually stop the floating.

If you don't mind, feel free to let me know how he is doing or if you have anymore questions!
Best wishes,
Karen~
