Question
QUESTION: Hi Michael,  I have a Michey Mouse Platy that has been giving birth since last Suday and still going at it.  This morning I noticed that she had a white spot on one of her fins.  Now it is on her tail and dorsal fin, as well.  It is not Ick.  It doesn't look like a cottony fungus. I am sure that she is pretty stressed from her gving birth for so long. Do you have any idea of what this could be and what I should do. I have removed all of the fry. What she is having now have been coming out dead.  She looks like she has a few more to go, yet. She still appears to be strong. I am really concerned.

Thank you
Toni

ANSWER: Toni,
could be a bacterial film if it looks sort of "cloudy".
under normal conditions I would swab it with peroxide solution.
however since she is in a stress situation I would save that for last.
If you feel it necessary you could take a bit of tank water like a quart and add in 2 tablespoons non iodized salt.
that may help her.
Other than that, its a watch and see.
Anything too strong will kill her.
let me know how it turns out.

QUESTION: Hi Michael, Well, I put some salt in the tank. She still has some baby's in her, but, none are coming out.  Does this happen? Today, is the 9th day since she started releasing fry. Is there nothing to do other than watch her?  As far as the white on her fins it may have been some kind of fungal infection.  It is getting better. She still seems to be pretty strong.  I just feel helpless.  She's trying to get the fry out, but, as I said nothing is coming out.
Thank you, Toni

ANSWER: Toni,
At this point you can raise the temp to 80-82, thats about it.
There is not much to do but watch. If she is finished and whats left are dead, her body will absorb them .
As long as she appears stong and the secondary problem with the infection is clearing up thats about all you can do at this time.
Keep me informed.

QUESTION: Ok, I'll try.  It's so hard watching and not being able to help her. But, her infection is much better.  When the infection is completely gone could I move her back into my main tank?  Even if she has the babies in her? Or do I wait until she stops shaking? Meaning trying to get the babies out. How do I know when she is finished?  This is so new to me.  I know I keep repeating myself. Thank you, so much, for all of your help and patients. You have been a tremendous help.

Toni

Answer
Toni,
I would let her rest for a while as this really saps out their stamina, make sure you are feeding good quality food with some green stuff as well.
After she calms down and rests for a few days I would say its ok to put her back in the main tank.
If you need anything, just ask.
