Do babies have to have an air stone?

Question
Yes this is my first time on this site and i was wondering if u absolutely have to have a air stone for little baby guppies that are in their own tank because they are way to small to go into the big aquarium with the bigger fish. So my question is, Do they have to have an airstone?

Answer
Hi Josh;

Welcome to AllExperts!

Your baby guppies will grow tro about an inch long and will need at least one gallon of water per fish if you have an airstone or filter for them. If none, two gallons per fish. This is so there is enough gas/oxygen exchange on the surface. Fill the bowl or tank only to the widest point. This maximizes the surface area for the highest oxygen availability. It's best to just add air or filtration and avoid disaster. Fancy guppies are especially delicate and need more care than the common "feeder" variety. Fancies also get much larger. Change 25% to 50% of their water once or twice a week. Guppies need clean water to thrive.

Live plants help too. Anacharis or elodea are very good. They provide oxygen as well as help absorb fish wastes.
