When starting a new tank what type of water do I need to use?

You have a few choices, if you decide to go with tap water, which is the most convenient, you will need to also use a de-chlorinator. I suggest Prime made by Seachem. If you go with bottled drinking water the inconvenience will, most likely, lead to skipping scheduled water changes.

If you are on a well system I suggest you get the tap water tested before you use it, but most all well systems are just fine.

Avoid straight distilled water, there are many problems associated with using it and it must be treated before use. The same applies to RO/DI water.

All in all, for a freshwater tank, I suggest regular tap water treated with Prime.
