If you are keeping freshwater tropical fish, the average temperature that most species like is anywhere from 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit. Certain species (such as corydoras and zebra danios) enjoy cooler temperatures, 72 F or so...that's why it's important to research every species! Goldfish, of course, are cold water fish and probably don't need a heater if the ambient temperature never gets below the 60s. In general, 75-78 F is what most tropical fish like for temperature.
