Goldfish and filtration

Question
QUESTION: Hello,   55 gal tank that is cycling.  My concern is that I may have to much water movement to suit fancy GF. Canister 265 gph and HOB 330 gph.  Can't seem to control HOB water  movement like I could with old HOB filter.  Did attach sprat bar to input from canister that may have helped a some.  The small Shrubunkin that is in tank to help with cycling seems to get moved around a good bit!  Any suggestions on how to cut back on water movement? Mid tank is fairly calm. First time  for canister, not sure if I should cut back the intake and output knobs, as I would be cutting back on the filtration......know goldfish need a lot of it. Appreciate your time and any in put.  Myrna

ANSWER: That is a lot of filtration.... and probably too mush water current for goldfish.  I would consider using the canister filter only at night time and the HOB all the time. If this is not what you are looking for then please let me know... dave

QUESTION: Thanks for your suggestion and I will try it.  Need to educate myself in using canister filter.......
Had read that for GF you would need 550 gph movement with a 55 gal tank.  Am I correct in thinking that it actually only holds 46-48 gal of water after putting inch of substrate and a few plants and decor?  Thank you for your time and input.   Myrna

Answer
The tank probably holds about 50 gallons with gravel and decorations.  The amount of filtration is dependent on the number of goldfish.  You can try both filters and a couple of goldfish and see how they do...They may do just fine.  If you want to use both filters then I would consider the more standard types of goldfish such as they shubunkins.... dave
