Has my black moore gone blind?!?

Question
I have a black moore fish who we have had for nearly a year now.
We went away for the weekend and on return we discovered that his eye appears to have gone white....not the film but the actual eye?
It is not bulging or looking unusual in any way...from a side view the eye looks clear like the other one.
He is still eating well and swimming around as before.
I was wondering if you could advise me as to what is wrong with him and if there is anything we can do to help him?
Thanks
Jenny

Answer
Hi Jenny
Check your water quality, ammonia and nitrites should be 0 ppm, and nitrates under 20 ppm.  Sounds to me like it may be a bacterial infection called cloudy eye.  It basically turns the eye a white/grey color, kind of like a cataract I guess.  Or, it could also be an injury as well.

I would suggest first doing a partial water change.  Then pick up an antibiotic like Maracyn Two or Maracyn Plus.  If it is a bacterial infection that will help, if it isn't, and it does happen to be an injury, it would still help with healing and prevent infection.  He may end up permanently blind in that eye, but fish can still get along fine with just one.  But it might be best to remove him if there's other aggressive fish in the tnak.  Be sure to keep the water quality good as well.  If there's anything sharp in the tank, remove it.

Good luck, and let me know if you have more questions, or if it gets worse.
