How long should I leave the light on a fresh water aquarium?

Hi Bruce,
Thank you for your question. If your room has natural light, like a big bright kitchen, you may not need a hood lamp. (No direct sunlight, though.) However, if your room is dark, you may want to run the light 4 - 5 hours a day. If algae starts to form, it could mean too much light.
