Beta Fish Jumping out???

Question
QUESTION: Hi David!
My daughter has 2 male beta fish (kept in separate bowls). She changed &
cleaned their bowls last night. This morning when she went to feed them, one
of them was halfway out of his bowl hanging on the side.  She came to me
crying (she thought that he was dead). I went in and gently thumped the side
and he fell back into the bowl. He didn't move much, but he was alive.  Then I
noticed that while it appeared  he wasn't moving, the water was vibrating
rapidly, so he had to be moving.  I looked closer and saw the fish was
shaking with intermittent little jerking motions??  Was this a seizure?   I asked
her if anything happened  while she was changing the water...she said that he
did jump from the small cup back into the big bowl once trying to escape.
That's it.   I have one upset little girl. Do you have any idea what would cause
a beta to do this?

ANSWER: Hi Gail:  I would change his water once more and add water conditioner to it to remove the chlorine... He may be getting sick or having a reaction to the new water.  If the water change does not perk him up I would medicate him with BettaFix... or another antibiotic that can be dosed to the size of his container... keep me posted... dave

QUESTION: HI David!  Well, its been a little over a week and "Yipweez" the beta fish looks
fine! Thank you so much for your help.  He did stay at the top of his bowl for
about 4 or 5 days, so much so that his top fin was sticking out of the water.  He
seems fine now and no more seizing and he is eating again.  I just wanted to let
you know ! Thanks again.

ANSWER: That is good news... thank you for letting me know... dave

QUESTION: Hi Again Dave!  Well, I thought everything was better until this afternoon
when my daughter found her fish lying on the shelf after school.(he wasn'r
dry yet & he did flinch whenI touched him)  I picked him up & put him back
into the bowl, but he sank(vertically)to the bottom.  He IS moving some, but is
there anything that we can do to help this poor little guy out?  Why is he doing
this?  Also, his bowl seems to get really cloudy btween his weekly cleaning.
Our other Beta's stays clean & clear?  What could be causing that?  Thanks
again...Gail

Answer
Fortunately for betta... they only  need to be kept moist to live out of the tank.  They can breath atmospheric air like you and I can so he will probably be ok.  I would clean his bowl every three days and see if this help him.  It sound like his water is not agreeing with him.  If his bowl is in a place that gets a little bit warmer it will speed up the chemical reactions in the water and could cause some toxicity to develop faster then in the other bettas bowl.  Direct sunlight could cause this as well as a heater vent.  keep me posted... dave
