Little Flies around the Fish Tank

Question
We have little flies around the top of our freshwater fish tank. They look like fruit flies.  What are they and what can we do about them?

Thank you for your time.
Teresa

Answer
Hi Teresa,
Those are probably some sort of little insect taking the opportunity to eat whatever is at the edge of your tank. I would check the edges of your tank and even under the hood and the light. Sometimes algae or even bits of food can accumulate there and cause little critters to find a quick meal. Wipe everything carefully with water and a sponge and see if that helps to eliminate them.

Hope this has helped,
Karen
