Question
How can you determine the age of the goldfish?

Answer
Dear Katie,
This is very difficult. Because it is not really as simple as saying, a four inch fish is say 4 months old since a goldfishes growth all depends on the care they were given. For example, a poorly cared for goldfish may be several years old and only 3 inches or so. While a properly cared for goldfish may be 6-8 inches at several years old. Not to say that all goldfish are poorly cared for. But if some get better quality of food or more frequent feedings and plenty of large water changes, their growth may become very fast and they could be a considerable size when they are a year or two old.

I'm sorry I cannot give a straight answer. But here's a few hints- ;-)
*After two months of age goldfish will begin to change color. For example- the juvenile colored bronze goldfish will begin to change to gold.
*With lionheads and Orandas, their head growth (also known as 'wen') begins to develop at 6 months of age.
*Telescope eyed varieties begin developing their "telescope eyes" at about 6 weeks old

I really hope this helps!!
Best wishes and Happy fishkeeping!
Karen~
