Question
I have a powder blue dwarf gourami who got stuck in a submarine that was a hiding place for my ghost shrimp we managed to get him out of the submarine by carefully breaking pieces off until he could get free but he did quite the bit of damage to himself before he was freed. i have him in a 5 1/2 gal tank by himself with a heater and filter and some hiding spots so he's not too exposed neutralized the water with API stress coat and have been treating with API melafix.  he gets his normal feeding schedule as the regular aquarium schedule but also a mid day helping of blood worms.  can you recommend any other tips for healing open wounds (they aren't bleeding just skin worn away) either water treatment or a food high in something that will help him heal better? thank you!!

Answer
Katie,
The thing to watch for here is infection in the wounds.
Either furry growth or slime.
Keep the temp up to 82-84, no problem for the Gourami and it inhibits infections.
Also, you could add methelene blue as a safeguard but if you do remove any carbon from your filter.
Also, you may stain the silicone on your tank blue, dosen;t hurt anything just looks a little weird.
If you notice fuzzy growth, you can remove it with peroxide on a Qtip, same with the slime, not regular fish slime but a grey, funky looking slime. Then put the fish back in the tank with the meds.
You can either swab them in the net or lay them on a damp washcloth and hold them with the web of the net.
Then just pop them back into the tank and thats that.
