Nitrate levels

Question
I have a 20-gallon tropical tank w/ about 12 platy's(4 are newborns). I do 15% water changes twice a week, I put Tetra "Easy Balance" in once a week and I test the water once a week w/ a strip. My fish are healthy and happy, but I recently noticed the water looking cloudy. My levels are all pretty good except my Nitrate level is ALWAYS high, about 160. I don't think I over feed and I don't think I'm overstocked on fish, I don't heavily clean or change the filters too often. What could be causing this? Should I get "Nitraban"? The Easy Balance I use says it has Nitraban in it. Please advise...Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi Liz,
Its really unnecessary to add Tetra 'Easy Balance' to your tank water. Its best to avoid extra chemicals in your water. Water changes do more for your aquarium than any chemicals ever could. It may be responsible for some of the cloudiness and the 'easy balance' could also be giving false readings for the nitrates.

I would try doing a few extra water changes and try not using the 'easy balance' for now. Then see how your nitrates are.

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
Karen~
