Question

Unknown Fish
I got 3 fish from a friend, but do not know what type they are and if they are safe to add to a community tank.  Right now i have them in a separate tank by themselves and was wondering if you know what they are and if they are safe to add to one of my community tanks, also if you know what sex they are, they all seem to look exactly the same as the one in the picture.

Answer
Hi Ian,
It is definitely a type of barb because of its shape.  I am also 90% sure it's a Rosy Barb.

Here is a link for you to see for your self.

Here is another picture for you to compare.

If you look very closely at the area near the tail on BOTH your picture and the site's picture.  You will see a faint black spot.  It is more faint on your pic but more prominent on the sites.  Like other barbs, these are semi-aggressive fish.  They love fin-nipping.  It depends what you have in your community tank.
