Ghost Shrimp

Question
Hi,

I recently moved my betta into a 5 gallon tank, uncycled, no filter. He has been in there for about two weeks, seems very happy, eats, swims around, builds bubble nest etc. Seems to be much happier than in the old 2 gallon tank. I keep the temp at 26 degrees celcuis.

I would love to add some ghost shrimp. Should I wait until the tank is fully cycled before I add the shrimp? How long will that be?

How many shrimp would I be able to add to a 5 gallon tank?

If my betta tries to eat the shrimp, is there anything I can do to stop him?

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Sam,

First of all, it would be best to add a filter into the tank. the filter will help keep down ammonia and nitrite levels, by providing a place for beneficial bacteria to live. Also, a filter will remove particular waste, and will also remove odors and discoloration.

Ghost Shrimp are extremely hardy. Although it would be best to wait until the cycling process is over, I wouldn't hesitate to dump them in right away. Ghost shrimp don't add much to the biological 'load' of the aquarium, and since they are quite small, you could comfortably put 5-10 in there. I'd add no more than 5 at a time.

If your Betta bugs  them, you can add some short, semi-dense plants fro them to hide in. Try a small clumping of Java Fern, or maybe some bunch plants, such as Hygrophila Polysperma. Providing some basic rock structures or ornaments will also help.

Try to perform 20% water changes twice a week until the cycling process is over (around a month, up to two months max). This will help maintain safe water conditions for the fish.

Good Luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
